About Karl Fred Dahmen
Karl Fred Dahmen attended the Aachen School of Applied Arts from 1932 to 1933 – until its closure . From 1933 to 1936 he trained as a graphic designer .
After his military service and time as a prisoner of war (1939–1945), he visited Paris for the first time in 1951. Inspired by new ideas from the École de Paris, he founded the “New Aachen Group” with some colleagues in 1952. His contacts in France enabled him to organize the first Franco-German exhibition entitled “Today” in 1953.
In 1954, he worked as an art teacher at a private school in Aachen. Two years later, he became a member of the German Artists' Association . In 1958, Dahmen participated as a guest of Group 53 in their exhibition at the Düsseldorf Art Gallery and finally joined this artists' association in 1959. In the same year, he was able to present his work to a wider audience at documenta II in Kassel .
He received a teaching position at the Bremen Art School in 1964, where Jimmi D. Paesler was one of his students. In 1966, he became a member of the New Group Munich and the West German Artists' Association . He received a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1967. His students there included Günther Förg , Dieter Breitschwerdt , Alfred Kaiser , Wolfgang Flatz , Hans Schnell , Dagmar Rhodius, Wolfgang Lauter , Eva-Maria Rapp, and Klaus Walterspiel.
In 1974, Dahmen became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. From 1978 he lived in Preinersdorf, where he died in 1981. Dahmen was buried in the Bergfriedhof cemetery in his birthplace of Stolberg .
